Weather Measurement Tools

Temperature is how hot or cold something is.

A thing that measures the temperature.  A thermometer shows how hot or cold something is.

A unit that is used to measure something.  Temperatures is measured in degrees.

The system used to measure temperature in some countries.  The United States of America measures temperature in Fahrenheit.

The system used to measure temperature in most countries.  Celsius is part of the Metric System of measurement. 

Water droplets that fall from clouds are called rain!

A rain gauge measures the rain.  It catches rain and shows how much water fell.

A wind vane shows which direction the wind is blowing.

An anemometer shows how fast the wind is blowing.  It catches the wind and this makes it spins.  How far it turns shows the wind speed.

A hygrometer measures how much water vapor is in the air.  This is called humidity.  A hygrometer measures the humidity in the air.

A barometer is used to measure wind.  It shows the wind pressure.

A wind sock is used to measure wind.  A wind sock measures the direction the wind is blowing.  It can also measure the strength of the wind.

A wind balloon measres weather higher up in the atmosphere.  It measures whether further away from Earth, but still within our atmosphere.

A sling psychrometer measures how much water vapor is in the air.

A compass shows direction.  It has a dial that shows north, south, east and west.  It has a magnet inside.  The Earth has magnetic poles on the top and bottom most north and most south places on earth.)  A compass can point to the nother pole.

A weather map is made to show changes in weather and atmosphere over time.

A weather satellite is in space.  It orbits the Earth.  A weather satellite can take photos of the earth to show air movements and weather patterns.

We can use our senses to notice weather changes.  We can feel the air temperature change.  We can feel wind on our skin.  We can feel changes in humidity in the air.  We can feel rain or snow. We can see clouds, sunny weather, and rain and snow.  We can also hear wind, rain and thunder.  We can even smell some changes in weather!  We can use our senses to notice changes in weather!
