A volcano has an opening in the center. Magma (hot melted rock) can shoot out and becomes lava which flows onto land.

erupt

When magma (hot melted rock) and ash burst out of a volcano this is called to erupt.

magma is hot, melted rock that is inside of the Earth.

lava

Lava is hot, melted rock that comes from inside the Earth's surface, through a volcano and flows onto land.
