Canyons and Sediment

The Earth can change.  Some changes happen fast.  Other changes can take millions of years to happen!

Different means to not be the same. When things change, they become different.

Tectonic plates are big pieces of the Earth’s crust.  Sometimes they can move.  This can make an earthquake.  

A canyon is a part of land.  A river can cut into rock over a long time.  It can make a deep valley.  Sometimes there is a river at the bottom of it.  

Hot melted rock can erupt from inside the Earth through an opening in a kind of mountain called a volcano.

Mountains are very big.  Mountains are formed when the Earth’s crust pushes together.  This takes millions or more years to happen.  It happens so slowly we cannot see it!

Water can be in different forms.  Water is in lakes, rivers and mountains.  Rain and snow are also made of water.

A river is made of water.  Many plants and fish live in a river.  It can rain and snow on mountains  Rivers move water from mountains to lakes and oceans.

A river can cut through land. This takes a long time.  When the water goes through a river, it can push rocks off and they go down the river.  The tiny rocks are called sediment.

A river can cut through land.  Rain can move rocks off a mountain.  Wind can move small rocks off a mountain.  Wind and water moving rocks from land is called erosion.

The Grand Canyon is a very large canyon in the United States.  It took millions of years for the river to make the canyon.  The water from the river pushed rocks from the land down the river.  This cut a canyon.  The Grand Canyon is very beautiful!
