Kinds of Rocks

Rocks are hard.  Rocks are made of minerals.  Minerals are inside of the Earth.

The water from a river can push rocks off the side of the river.  The small rocks can move down the river.  These rocks are called sedminet.

Tiny pieces of rock can be break off the sides of a river.  Wind can push tiny pieces of rock off a mountain.  Over a very long time these tiny pieces of rocks can be pushed together, to make a bigger rock.  This is called sedimentary rock.

A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust.  It is shaped like a point, with a hole in the middle.  Sometimes a volcano can erupt.  When it erupts, hot lava comes out of the volcano.  Gases and ash can also come out of a volcano.

Inside the Earth is rock and metal.  Some of the rock is so hot it has melted.  This rock is called magma.

Hot melted rock can come out of a volcano.  This melted hot rock is called lava.  Lava is the same as magma.  Magma is hot melted rock inside the Earth.  A volcano can shoot magma out of it.  Magma is called lava when it is outside of the Earth.   When lava cools it becomes rock.

Lava is hot melted rock that comes out of a volcano.  When it cools the lava becomes hard rock.  This rock is called volcanic rock.

Lava is hot. melted rock. WHen lava cools it becomes rock.  This kind of rock is called volcanic rock.  It can also be called igneous rock.

Something can be pushed together very hard.  Pressure pushing on something is called compression.

The inside of the Earth has layers.  The outer layer of Earth is called the outer core.  Minerals, rock, and magma form the outer core.

The inside of the Earth has layers.  The inner core is the most inner part of the. Earth. The inner core is made of metal and rock.

Metamorphic rocks are rock that is made inside the Earth.  The Earth’s pressure and heat make a rock!  Metamorphic rocks are made of minerals.

Minerals come from inside of the Earth.  Iron and coal are minerals that are inside of the Earth.
