Kinds of Rocks

igneous rock

Lava is hot. melted rock. When lava cools it becomes rock. This kind of rock is called volcanic rock. It can also be called igneous rock.

volcanic rock

Lava is hot melted rock that comes out of a volcano. When it cools the lava becomes hard rock. This rock is called volcanic rock.

volcano

A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust. It is shaped like a point, with a hole in the middle. Sometimes a volcano can erupt. When it erupts, hot lava comes out of the volcano.

lava

Hot melted rock can flow from a volcano. This melted rock is called lava.

sedimentary rock

Over a very long time these tiny pieces of rocks can be pushed together, to make a bigger rock. This is called sedimentary rock.

sediment

Tiny pieces of rock that have broken off a mountain of canyon are called sedminet. Rivers carry sediment to new places.

erosion

Wind and water can break off tiny pieces of rock from a mountain or canyon. This is called erosion.

pressure

Things can push on other things. This is called pressure.

compression

Something can be pushed together very hard. Pressure pushing on something is called compression.

metamorphic rock

Metamorphic rocks are rock that is made inside the Earth. The Earth’s pressure and heat make a rock! Metamorphic rocks are made of minerals.

rock

Rocks are hard. Rocks are made of minerals. Minerals are inside of the Earth.

magma

Hot melted rock inside the Earth's surface is called magma.

minerals

Minerals come from inside of the Earth. Iron and coal are minerals that are inside of the Earth.
