Earthquakes and Mountains

change

The Earth can change. Some changes happen fast. Other changes take millions of years!

tectonic plate

The Earth's crust is made of big pieces of rock. These are called tectonic plates.

mountain

A mountain is very big. A mountain can form from tectonic plates very slowly pushing together. This can take millions of years!

sediment

Rain can break little pieces off of mountains. These pieces are called sediment. Sediment can be moved by rivers. It can also form new rock.

fault

The Earth's crust has big pieces. These are called tectonic plates. Where the plates meet is called a fault.

magma

Inside the Earth is hot melted rock. This is called magma.

earthquake

Tectonic plates can move. This can cause an earthquake.

erosion

Water can move rock from mountains. This is called erosion.
