Chemical Change

Matter can change to make a new kind of matter.

This is called a chemical change.

We can mix eggs, flour, sugar and milk.

We can put it in the oven.

It makes a cake!

The cake is very different from the eggs, flour, sugar and milk.

It cannot go back to being those things.

The matter has changed.

We can burn wood.

When we burn it, it gives off heat and light.

The wood changes to ash and smoke.

The ash and smoke cannot go back to being wood.

It has made a chemical change.

A chemical change can change the matter to a new kind of matter!
