Food Chain

Sunlight gives energy to plants.  Animals eat plants.  Some animals eat other animals.  We can show this with a drawing of a food web.  A food web shows how animals and their food connect.

The Sun gives off energy.  The energy from the Sun helps plants to grow.

Plants are living things.  A plant often has a root, a stem, and leaves.  Many animals eat plant for energy.

Animals are living things.  Animals move.  Animals eat.  Animals have young animals.  Lions, giraffes, fish, bids, and whales are all animals!

A predator is an animals that is looking for another animals to eat as food. A wolf might chase a rabbit to eat it.  The wolf is the predator.

Some animals eat other animals.  The animal who is being chased to be eaten is called prey.  A wolf can catch a rabbit.  The rabbit is the prey.

Waste is something that is not needed.  Garbage is waste.  Animals eat.  What their bodies do not need is called waste.  They make waste when they go to the bathroom.

Animals make waste when they go to the bathroom.  The waste goes into the soil.  The waste can help the soil to be healthy and good for plants.  This is called compost.
