Sunlight gives energy to plants.  Some animals eat plants.  Some animals eat other animals.  This makes the food chain.  The food chain is energy moving from the sun, plants, and animals to other plants and animals.

Some animals eat only plants.  Animals that eat only plants are called herbivores.  The word herb- means plant.

Some animals eat other animals.  Animals that eat only animals are called carnivores.  The word carne- means meat.

Some animals eat both plants and animals.  These are called omnivores.  The word omni- means many.

Sunlight gives energy to plants.  Some animals eat plants.  Some animals eat other animals.  The energy from the sun and plants move into other animals.  We can show this with a drawing of a food web.  A food web shows how animals and their food connect.  Even waste from animals goes into the ground and turns into energy to plants!
